Penobscot Day

Fireworks over the Bagaduce on Penobscot Day

Taking place on the second Saturday in July each year, Penobscot Day is a town-wide event with something of interest for everyone. The excitement begins at the Penobscot Historical Society with a breakfast and a first look at the huge yard sale, which lasts all day long. During the day, there is a parade through town, children’s games at the school, lunch and a silent auction at the Historical Society, and a barbecue lunch at the Fire Department. In the evening, there is a dinner at the Methodist Church, music behind the Bayview Takeout and an impressive display of fireworks to top everything off. This is an event not to be missed! The Penobscot Day organizing committee coordinator is Alden Blodgett. Rick Leighton is treasurer and Jon Albrecht is Secretary.

  • Committee Chair - Alden Blodgett
  • Fireworks co-chaired by Alden Blodgett and Jan McKay
  • Events chair is open

Volunteers are needed on the organizing committee and during Penobscot Day. Please contact the above people or leave your contact information at the town office.

  • Donations can be sent to the Town Office for the Penobscot Day Committee.
  • Donations of Bottles and cans left at the Town Transfer Station will be used for Penobscot Day only.
  • Funds also appropriated by the town vote.

The Penobscot Music Buffet

Penobscot’s monthly musical event, The Music Buffet, is held once a month on Fridays in the annex of the Penobscot United Methodist Church. All are welcome to come hear and share a wide variety of music during the open-mic hour beginning at 7 p.m. At 8 p.m., a featured artist takes the stage.

Since its inception in January of 2010, hundreds of open-mic and featured performers, ranging from age 3 to 83, on all manner of instruments, have contributed a virtual smorgasbord of music: blues to bluegrass; reels to rock; classics to classical; sing-along to dance-along; original to traditional; and jazz to jugband.

With over 30 different featured acts have included established “pros” as well as other talented acts from our peninsula and “away”, founder, former co-host, and musician Skip Bean says, “Don’t be shy. Our audiences warmly receive all performers regardless of experience.”

The Music Buffet continues to satisfy not only a wide variety of musical tastes, but serves a higher purpose as well. A free-will donation is collected each month, with 2/3 of the money going to a community fuel assistance fund and the other 1/3 going to the Tree of Life Food Pantry in Blue Hill. Thanks to the generosity of the audiences and performers, the initial milestone of $10,000 passed and and a current total of (X) has been donated as of December 2023.

Walking Trails

Trail Map sign at Wallamatogus

Note to hikers: During hunting season it is especially important that all trail users be aware of others using the lands. Hikers should wear blaze orange (front and back) as a safety measure, just as hunters do. Dogs should remain leashed and should also be wearing some visible article of blaze orange. During the month-long deer hunting season with firearms, Sundays are the best days to hike.

Penobscot Cemeteries

Of Penobscot’s 73 cemeteries, the Bay cemetery is the only municipal owned. The Hillside cemetery is maintained by an association. The remaining 71 cemeteries are private ancient burying grounds in a range of conditions from very poor to very good. Perkin’s Point Cemetery has been beautifully restored while the Hutchins-Snowman cemetery has not. 38 of the cemeteries have less than 10 markers and are often found long abandoned in the woods of Penobscot.

Bertha and Royden Bowden in the early 70’s trampled the woods of Penobscot locating many abandoned ancient cemeteries to document those interred there. Information listed below is almost entirely their work. They were also founding members of the statewide Maine Old Cemetery Association. In the 1940’s the North Brooksville Historical Society researched some of the cemeteries.
