Of Penobscot’s 73 cemeteries, the Bay cemetery is the only municipal owned. The Hillside cemetery is maintained by an association. The remaining 71 cemeteries are private ancient burying grounds in a range of conditions from very poor to very good. Perkin’s Point Cemetery has been beautifully restored while the Hutchins-Snowman cemetery has not. 38 of the cemeteries have less than 10 markers and are often found long abandoned in the woods of Penobscot.
Bertha and Royden Bowden in the early 70’s trampled the woods of Penobscot locating many abandoned ancient cemeteries to document those interred there. Information listed below is almost entirely their work. They were also founding members of the statewide Maine Old Cemetery Association. In the 1940’s the North Brooksville Historical Society researched some of the cemeteries.
