The Castine Wood Bank provides firewood to low-income families on the Peninsula. The wood bank is led by Gil Tenney and Pedric Sweet and with support from Community Compass, a non-profit program working with partner organizations and volunteers to break the cycle of poverty on the Blue Hill Peninsula and Deer Isle and Stonington. The wood bank is a growing effort and distributed 10 to 12 cords of wood in the winter of 2015-2016.
Those in need of assistance from the wood bank can contact Gil Tenney or Pedrick Sweet directly or through the town office or a local church. Contact information is below.
Those interested in donating or volunteering with the wood bank are also encouraged to contact the program. Volunteers are needed to pick up wood donations, cut and split donated logs, and deliver and stack wood for recipients. Trucks are needed for making deliveries. Wood can be donated cut, split, and stacked, or as whole logs. Cash donations are also accepted for purchasing supplies from dealers.
